Shopping and Starbucks

Bad had a doctor's appointment yesterday, so after dropping the Princess off at school I strapped him in the car and drove to the city. We moved up here more than 3 years ago, but I've never bothered changing doctors. I like ours so much I think it's worth the 45 min drive. We usually make a day of it - go for lunch, do some shopping. The budget is a little tight these days, so we met my sister and nephew at Chapters. I had a gift card from Christmas to spend, and since they have a train-set in the Children's section and an on-site Starbucks, it's a fabulous place to while away a couple hours.

When we lived in the city I was a Starbucks girl. That was the coffee shop nearest school and work, and that was where I went, despite Hubs constant moaning over their prices. Since moving north, I've found myself without a convenient location, and have become a Tim Horton's drive-thru girl. I realized it had become an excessive habit when the Princess, age 2, piped up from the backseat one day as we were driving down the highway, "Mommy? Can you please roll down your window and get me a timbit?" (For those of you in Timmy's free zones, a timbit is a mini donut) The coffee is good, but yesterday, sipping my Starbuck's tall skinny latte, in a big leather chair in front of a roaring fire, I realized how much part of me still misses fancy coffee and city life. It was wonderful. It was partly the company that made it great, and since my beautiful nephew is still not crawling, my sister was free to help me chase Bad all around the store!

Here's what we bought:

This is an illustrated version of the classic poem by Robert Service. The illustrations are by Ted Harrison, and are gorgeous. It's a bit ahead of where my kids are now, but we already have an out of control collection of board books and storybooks for little ones, so I think a book to grow into was a better choice. My dad used to read this poem to us all the time, and when I saw this book on display I knew immediately I was going to buy it. Now I just have to get the kids and the book to my dad, so that he can read it to them. I've got the rhythm and cadence right, but he is a raconteur of the highest order, and I can't mimic the humour he injects into his delivery, or the wonderful timbre of his voice. And it's his voice that I want them to hear when they read this to themselves later, just like I do.

I also bought this:
to give to the kids for Valentine's day. It's a very sweet story. And, if anyone out there is looking for an inexpensive gift for the Princess, or any other equally royal little girl, I bought this for the Princess to take to a birthday party this weekend. She loves it, and is very distressed that it isn't for her!
I love a successful shopping trip. Now if only I could get another latte.....

Bookstores are my downfall! They are my biggest budget destroyer. One night, my husband and I decided to have a date in the bookstore. We gathered a bunch of books that were interesting to us, sat down on a big comfy couch, and we shared interesting tidbits we garnered from each book. I may be weird, but it was totally romantic!

Why is it that drinking coffee in a cafe tastes so much better than at home? Maybe it's the paper cup but it always makes me feel a little special and fancy to get coffee while I'm out.

What a lovely day. I adore living in the city, love having everything at your doorstep.
Love to spend the day in the bookstore too:)

What great books!!! I also love Starbucks latte's but yes, the price is astronomical! I find my daily Tim fix (with the requisite Timbits for the kiddos) a guilty pleasure in itself.
Glad you had a successful shopping trip in the city. I love going downtown too... as you know, I LOVE to shop ;)
Thx for your lovely comment on my post earlier too. You're pretty amazing yourself.

I love bookstores, I could live in them.

In California, there was a Starbucks in the building that I worked in. I was super addicted. Now there isn't one convienant, so I drink my coffee from home. I'm a bit sad about it, but man I do have a bit more money these days. :)

we do the same thing with our doctor. We moved west of the city, but I can't bring myself to change doctors. My sister changed doctors, but is going to try to go back. When you find a good one it's hard to leave.

And, I'm with you. I way prefer a nice Starbucks latte. No matter what anyone says, they do make the best lattes.

My son has moved past timbits. He now requests a sprinkle donut.

Never heard of Tims drive thru but really cute that pricess knows what she wants already. We also don't have any Starbucks close by. I think the closest one is around an hour and a half north in Burlingtion. It would be nice to have real coffee sometimes.

I am now a Starbucks girl.....when I get a coffee-not from my own kitchen.
I started as a Tim's girl but the MSG in their coffee made me sick so when we lived in AB I swithced to Second Cup...there where two within 5 mins of where we lived and worked. Now in SK Starbucks is my teat...not quite as good as Second Cup but a close second.

About the Creamation of Sam McGee...I loved that story and my dad would read it to us with such animation it scared our pants off.
I must go find it now....thanks!
(ooo it would also be a good excuse to get a latte)

Ahh, the bookstore. I could spend hours there. Oh, wait. I do. ;) But books AND a train table? What could be better?!

My daughter just got the same bead set for her birthday (5) and she loves it. LOVES. Good choice!

I do find it hard to shop for girls, only having a boy. Thanks for the tip. The girls seem to like my boy and he is getting invited to more birthday parties....

Sometimes I miss the city as well.

I love bookstores. Truly a bad habit I don't indulge in too often because I spend too much money. So most of my book browsing is at the library.

Oh I love books, and all bookstores. I can't leave without a few...you should see my house.

I just can't make the switch to Tims. I found a local coffee place that brews it dark and straight up just like I like it - no Tims for me. But we go for coffee too much too as tiny girl often asks, when are we going for coffee? lol.

Oh and no beads at or house! I've spent a year vacuuming up the last set I bought. The girlies do love them though and it's a great gift for someone else! lol.

I could fund a community college scholarship for the amount of dough I spend on books and lattes.
Sounds like a great day.

Sounds like the perfect day in the city!

I also find, in Ontario, that if you've found a good doctor, it's worth the drive to keep them. For a while I even commuted from north of TO to London for my doctor. Got a bit silly after a while, but I still miss her!
