It lives!

Some of you may be saying to yourselves "um, yeah Badness, it's some paperwhites....so?" You have obviously never witnessed the peculiar phenomenon of a plant that shrivels up and dies the moment I walk into a room, choosing the speed and relative painlessness of suicide over the unwitting but inevitable long, drawn out tortuous death it would receive at my hands.

The Princess and I were given a kit for forcing paperwhite bulbs at a baby shower in late November. She was thrilled, and I was quaking in fear. I have black thumbs. My hanging baskets die every year, and they stay up, dry and brown, mocking me, until after Hallowe'en. The Princess still bemoans the death of the beautiful purple flowers she chose to plant there. She wanted to grow the paperwhites so I planted the bulbs, despite my misgivings. And lo and behold! I kept them alive long enough to see them bloom! They didn't flower in time for Christmas - though they would have if I hadn't left the box on the counter, afraid to touch it, for almost two weeks. The Princess claps for every new flower....score one for mommy.

Hey, I managed to get a couple to bloom myself a few years ago. Minor miracle for me too, so I soooo know your feeling :)
Thanks for the kind words over at my place.
I love the new look of the blog.
Happy new year to you and your family!

I still have a giant pot of dead mums on my front porch - they're dead but I still feel bad throwing them away. This is why the garden that is supposed to FEED us is a bad idea . . . but we're apparently going to do it anyways. Cross your fingers we don't starve and congrats on the beautiful flowers!

Gorgeous! I would have quaked in fear as well. Plants and I do not mix. I think I even killed the cacti my kids got.
Good for you!

Ooo - so pretty! I can almost smell 'em! Good job, mom!

We're forcing some paperwhites as well. I have no hope for their blooms at all. =)

I have them too, the black thumbs that is.
Now that we live on the west coast things outside my house, in my yard, have a much better chance. The poor house plants however are still dieing:(
Congrats!

I was actually succeeding in growing TWO houseplants!! (The secret is that I can water them from my shower, so I don't forget to water them....)

But I set them outside to get some rain and fresh air. And forgot them for three days. We live in the desert. Even in November the sun burns the heck out of houseplants. Dang.

Woot on the paperwhites! They look terrific! My new plan to get houseplants and flowers like this is to befriend people who can grow them, and steal their plants. Lucky for you I live in Arizona...

Go on and celebrate! Not only do I have black thumbs, my apartment has approximately 2 windows in which to put plants. Of which the blinds are always closed. Because we're nudists. Or hermits. Possibly both.

oh I adore those. I wish I had done that this year. How many weeks did it take? Could I have some for Easter if I started now?

They are Gorgeous - well done. I don't do houseplants but our roses grow in spite of us not doing much.

I'll have to try that since live plants don't last very long at my house either. And they're beautiful too.

I can relate.
We have exactly one plant in our house and it is the kind that would grow no matter what.
My husband is the gardner, and he forbids me to be around his plants in the summer because I tend to kill them.

These are beautiful. Here's hoping they elude the Black Thumb of Death! (I have one too.)
