The driver of our ice-cream truck has been keeping eccentric and erratic hours this year. We've heard his siren song while cooking dinner, or while the kids are drifting off to sleep, but nary once in between. Despite numerous trips to Dairy Queen and various other purveyors of quality frozen treats, the Princess has continued to bemoan a summer without a trip to the ice-cream truck. Yesterday he drove by just as I'd dumped some tortellini into it's pot of boiling water. I looked out the window and saw him stopped at the park. What was a good mom to do?
"Princess! Bad! Grab your shoes - Let's go spoil our dinner!"
We ran down the street to catch him before he drove off; and ordered chocolate-vanilla twisty cones to eat as we slowly ambled back home to finish cooking dinner.
As I set the table the Princess said "Mom, I want to give you something," and she laid a big kiss on my lips. "Thanks for letting us have ice-cream before dinner. This is the best thing we've done all summer!" Then she pranced around the kitchen singing, "We catched the ice-cream truck! We catched the ice-cream truck!"
Is there anything better than a heartfelt (and un-prompted) thank-you kiss from your children? Worth spoiling dinner for? Anytime.

your ice cream man has twisty cones?? mine only has pre-packaged treats....but still worth chasing after....
That is awesome!
I'm all about ruining dinner for ice cream and doing other crazy things that some parents frown on.
When we were in Disney World Matt was totally cranky and tired and whining a LOT. I turned to him and said "how would you like a ride in the stroller and some ice cream." Seriously. We did amazing things there and he still brings up the stroller ride and ice cream.
You are a rockin' mama Badness! Good for you, I am so happy to see you posting again, I missed you. Thanks for coming by, we should chat sometime soon. I was thinking about you and your father the other day actually.
Take care,
Kristen
Aww. I think I need more ice cream in my life.
How fun! The ice cream truck never comes through our neighborhood, which is such a bummer.
you seriously rock!
I've seen neither hide nor hair of our ice cream truck this year. Maybe there's a shortage?
And twisty cones? How cool! We just get over priced popscicles.
I loved this story!!!! You Princess is the sweetest.
Ice cream trucks remind me of when I was 3 back in Montreal. We had one come by regularly, and I would race there with my mom.
We had one in our old neighbourhood in the city and I used to RUN to it, yes, 30-something me; now in the burbs we don't have one and I miss it. More for the kids, honestly ;)
And THAT is a memory she will keep forever...
You are a great mom and you got the icecream kiss to prove it! We don't have icecream trucks where we are, being so far in the country, but on vacation the kids love to buy treats from them.
Thanks for your note/comment today!! Yes, my doc lets me have drugs. I love her. Phenergren for nauseousness (or extreme insomnia) and benadryl if I am just semi tired. I don't abuse it though.
I don't even like taking the tylenol she says to take if I have a headache (im' a migrane sufferer), but I will if I really need it.
Hope you are doing well - it's been a while since we've heard from ya!
